This gift will be treasured by anyone who is moving into a new home, getting married or reaching any milestone in life, from a special anniversary to a new baby.

  • 4” x 6” wooden shadow box (or size of your choice)
  • 1 piece of double-sided patterned paper, or 2 coordinating papers (one sheet/side should have larger flowers, fruit, or other item that is easy to cut out)
  • 3-D foam tape, dots, or squares

  • Straight edge paper cutter
  • Craft scissors
  • Glue stick

  • Photographs
  • Letter stickers
  • Acid free pens/markers

Start by carefully removing the back of the shadow box. Use this as a template for cutting out a piece of paper that will become the background for your shadow box design.

Next, cut out several pictures from the coordinating side/sheet of paper, being sure to leave a little “white space” or extra margin around the edges.

Take one or two of the largest images and glue directly to the background page. On top of these, start layering the other images in order of size, using foam tape. Layer images over one another by stacking pieces of foam tape to build up height. For example, if the image below is one foam square high, build the overlapping image up with two foam squares stuck together. Only use one layer of foam tape where the images touch.

Finally, take the smallest image and adhere it to the OUTSIDE of the shadow box, giving the ultimate illusion of depth.

Optional tip:
Use a larger shadow box, and in place of the background paper, use a baby announcement, wedding invitation, photos or even a copy of a diploma. Layer paper cutouts of wedding bells, baby booties or a mortar cap with foam tape to add interest.
